The area was originally home to the Wintu people. European American settlement began in the early 19th century, with the town officially named Palo Cedro in 1893 after earlier names of Albertson and Roberts. In the late 1800s, the Anderson and Bella Vista Railroad passed through, supporting miners, lumber companies, and residents. Country music legend Merle Haggard lived in Palo Cedro for many years until his passing in 2016.
