Shasta, often called "Old Shasta," is a historic Gold Rush community located just six miles west of Redding along Highway 299. Once the largest settlement in the region and the original county seat, Shasta is now a quiet residential area centered around the preserved Shasta State Historic Park. The discovery of gold near Shasta in 1848 transformed this area into a bustling town of approximately 3,500 residents. It served as a major commercial center, supply hub for mule trains and stagecoaches, and the Shasta County seat. Two major fires led to the construction of brick buildings, many of which still stand. When the Central Pacific Railroad bypassed Shasta in favor of Redding in 1873, businesses relocated and the town declined. Today, Shasta State Historic Park preserves the restored 1861 Courthouse Museum and the haunting ruins of the Gold Rush-era commercial district.
